Synthetic and biological nanoparticles combined to produce new metamaterials

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Scientists from Aalto University, Finland, have succeeded in organising virus particles, protein cages and nanoparticles into crystalline materials. These nanomaterials studied by the Finnish research group are important for applications in sensing, optics, electronics and drug delivery.

Layer structures, or superlattices, of crystalline nanoparticles have been extensively studied in recent years. The research develops hierarchically structured nanomaterials with tuneable optical, magnetic, electronic and catalytic properties.

Such biohybrid superlattices of nanoparticles and proteins would allow the best features of both particle types to be combined. They would comprise the versatility of synthetic nanoparticles and the highly controlled assembly properties of biomolecules, according to the authors.

The research group also discovered magnetic self-assemblies of ferritin protein cages and gold nanoparticles. These magnetic assemblies can modulate efficiently spin-spin relaxation times of surrounding protons in water by enhancing the spin dephasing and consequently provide contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The gold nanoparticles and viruses adopt a special kind of crystal structure. It does not correspond to any known atomic or molecular crystal structure and it has previously not been observed with nano-sized particles.

Virus particles -- the old foes of humankind -- can do much more than infect living organisms. Evolution has rendered them with the capability of highly controlled self-assembly properties. Ultimately, by utilising their building blocks we can bring multiple functions to hybrid materials that consist of both living and synthetic matter, Kostiainen trusts.

Whale Bones On Florida's New Smyrna Beach Revealed By Superstorm Sandy (VIDEO)

The skeleton of a rare whale unearthed by superstorm Sandy erosion has been discovered on a Florida beach.

WESH reports that an Orlando-area couple was combing New Smyrna Beach for sand dollars when they saw a piece of bone jutting out from an eroded dune. They started digging and uncovered an 8 to 9 foot beaked whale skeleton that is thought to have been buried in the sand for decades.

The bones have been reported to authorities and will be housed at a local marine science center.

Although Sandy passed well offshore of the Florida coast, wind and waves from the storm eroded miles of beaches along the Eastern Seaboard, causing millions of dollars in damage.

According to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, beaked whales forage for food in deep-sea dives that are "deeper and longer than those reported for any other air-breathing species." Their deep-sea habitat makes the species difficult to study, so less is known about them than other whales.

In November, CNN reported that a pair of dead whales that washed ashore in New Zealand in 2010 were confirmed to be spade-toothed beaked whales, one of the rarest species in the world. Data on the species was so rare that it took scientists two years to positively identify the whales.

This isn't the first time rare old whale bones have been found on a U.S. beach this year. In November, the fossilized vertebrae of an extinct whale species were found by surfers on a Santa Cruz, Calif., beach.

Family Tree Maker free sub problem

I experienced a similar problem earlier this year when I installed the software on a friend's computer.

The cause was due to the fact that he already had a current Ancestry subscription (in his case "Essentials") so instead of adding 6 months premium membership, 6 months was being added to his Essentials membership.

Do you already have a Premium Sub? If so you need to cancel it and then wait for it to expire. Once you do this you can reliably go back and activate the subscription.

In my friend's case I phoned Ancestry and they confirmed what I already suspected. Once his previous sub had expired we were able to activate his Premium subscription with no bother.

Why is Rich Media Messaging Making Direct Mail Marketing ...

We have been sending flyers, inserts and catalogs to our customers for years. It?s one of the few tangible means of getting our customers to interact with our brands. With mobile saturating the market, our customer habits are changing and our marketing methodologies have not necessarily kept pace with the change. When it comes to print marketing, what we really want to know is if our efforts are working, when it makes the most sense to invest in print materials, and what mobile techniques we can use to drive the best results.

Below we examine different challenges marketers face when using direct mail as a marketing tool and how Rich Media Messaging (RMM), the next generation multimedia messaging technology, provides an alternative solution to engage consumers for direct marketing campaigns delivering immediate and cost effective results.

High Cost

Consider that the average cost per acquisition using direct mail is $51.40 (Direct Marketing Association, 2012) and it continues to get more expensive over time as the overall response rates keep declining. Now, with the introduction of Rich Media Messaging, it is possible to deliver robust image, video and long text based content to 96% of your customers at standard messaging rates and increase your response rates to drive down cost. RMM enables marketers to leverage consumer behavior as almost all Americans now own a cell phone and keep them within arm?s reach 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This permits us to push the relevant message via mobile to a broad base of customers, track results, and decrease costs to a less than a dollar per acquisition.

Low Response Rates

Direct mail response rates have dropped approximately 25% over the past nine years (DMA, 2012). Current direct mail response rates are hovering at 3.4%. Additionally, it is not possible to track the number of customers who actually read the materials when using direct mail. Rich Media Messaging is a new and innovative technology that is leveraging new consumer behaviors via mobile to communicate more effectively with your consumers. With a well thought out plan that focuses on delivering value to customers, marketers can use Rich Media Messaging to deliver images, video and long text directly to their customer handsets and obtain open rates of close to 97%, 90% of which are opened within the first 3 minutes (Frost & Sullivan, 2011). Actual data shows that redemption rates for RMM hover on average at 30%, which can truly redefine the expectations and results of your marketing program.

Long Delivery Cycle

When using direct mail, it often takes marketers several weeks to design, print and deliver the materials to the customer. With the introduction of digital and mobile tools, it has become increasingly important to have real time conversations with our customers. When using RMM it is now possible to identify immediate opportunities and react to them within days instead of weeks. Using this approach gives us a legitimate advantage when dealing with our customers and our competitors. Consider the case where your inventory levels surge on a specific product, using RMM it takes a few days to design and deploy the campaign vs. delivering the same campaign via direct mail.

RMM provides us with a low cost, immediate direct marketing solution that delivers higher response rates than direct mail. As our customer habits evolve, it is important to understand how we can leverage the same innovative solutions to drive results and surpass our expectations as marketers on what we can hope to achieve. RMM is a proven technology that can amplify our tool kits and truly impact how we view direct marketing and our possible results.

Finance News: What Wealth Building Really Means - Investment ...

Read More Articles Like this on My blog at/

A man was heard to say, "After my first divorce, I swore that I would never destroy all of my efforts to build wealth again. But my second and third wives had their own plans!"

We all know the story of the 3 Little Pigs. The first pig was in a hurry and built his house of the first thing he could find, which was straw, and the wolf of happenstance quickly blew that down! The second pig figured he was a little smarter, but did not want to spend the money so he built his house of sticks. But the wolf of misfortune quickly blew his house down too! The third pig had a Plan. He was a Smart Little Pig. He understood the Compounded Power of Synergy in a relationship and he loved and respected his wife. So he consulted with his wife and family and they thought carefully about what they wanted, both for now and in the future.

They wanted a house that would last, was secure and would build in value. They made their house of brick and the wolf of fate could Not blow this house down! The part of the story that is not often told is that the third pig did more than build his house of brick. Long before he ordered the brick and hired the brick layers, he and his wife hired a soil engineer to find ground that was solid.

He consulted with the zoning and planning people in his area to ensure that there were no freeways or other commercial development that would impact the quiet beauty and value of his home. Then he consulted an architect that was very good at building quality homes that would last, were practical, functional and would grow in value.

You see, the third pig and his wife took the time to do their homework which is also called Due Diligence. They decided that building a quality house was not just good for their family home, but it also fit into their Wealth Building Plan so that all their piglets would benefit too. They built upon a Solid Foundation, both in terms of structure and planning.

Due Diligence versus Lottery Logic

How many emails do you get a day that have buzz words with an appeal to get rich quick, effortlessly? How many television, magazine, mail or newspaper advertisements do you see a day that contain words such as easy, no money down or get wealthy while you sleep? Your brain, at an intellectual level, knows these types of offers frequently do Not deliver what they claim. You also know from personal experience that things are rarely as easy as advertised.

Inside of you, you know this. Yet it can be enticing to take a chance. This is what I call Lottery Logic. Too easily, many of us are swayed by the argument that Somebody will win the lottery. Yes, this is true, someone will. However, this form of logic tends to overlook facts such as your odds of winning are about 1 in 10,000,000 or greater.

You cannot Build Wealth using Lottery Logic.

In the last two years our economy has suffered from high unemployment, lending and investment failures, declines in retirement funds, budget deficits and much more. First real estate and then the stock market as investments collapsed. So is now a good time to invest in stocks, real estate or some other investment? It could be.

However this is not the right question. The question you should ask yourself is: Is now a good time for You to invest in stocks, real estate or something else? To effectively answer This question, you must have a clear understanding of what you and your family needs and wants now and in the future.

A clear understanding requires that you acknowledge your actual level of expertise in making these kinds of investments and make no assumptions. If you don't have the right experience or knowledge, find viable resources that you can understand and trust.

It is especially important to have a clear picture of your long term goals. Long term goals influence short term goals. Therefor you need a Plan that includes the following:

1. Financial and personal goals 2. The steps to getting there 3. Criteria for how you will work together (Love factors) and criteria for investing and using money (Money Factors) 4. Criteria and steps for educating yourself and finding resources that will help you to do your due diligence before making decisions 5. An Action Plan

Obtaining good information combined with a solid plan, are the foundation for effective Wealth Building.

Smiling in the Face of Indictment, Lieberman Steps Down as Israel?s Foreign Minister

Baz Ratner / Reuters

Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Avigdor Lieberman steps down as Israel?s foreign minister today, five days after being indicted on charges of fraud and breach of trust.? The fiery populist spoke as if he was going down the hall, calling the retreat from office ?temporary? and adding, ?I assume the break will be very short.?? It may well be.? He is still standing for election to the Knesset on Jan. 22, his name below only that of Benjamin Netanyahu on the joint ballot shared by the Likud party and Yisrael Beiteinu, the ultranationalist party Lieberman founded and rules by fiat. (He retained his Knesset seat but cannot serve in the cabinet while under indictment.)

The defendant?s sangfroid, which analysts and pollsters call justified, says a great deal both about the state of Israeli governance and about Lieberman?s place in it. Two of the more prominent politicians on the January ballot carry criminal records from previous terms in office : Tzachi Hanegbi, a onetime justice minister convicted of perjury in 2010, is running with Likud, while?Aryeh Deri, the charismatic leader of the Shas party who did two years for bribery, campaigns under the slogan, ?He?s back.? ?Both are essentially guaranteed seats in the next Knesset.? But then, surveys indicate Israelis expect very little from their politicians. The 2012 Israel Democracy Index found that, of all public institutions, political parties rank dead last for trust.? Only one in three Israelis report even ?some extent? of faith in them.

?This is something that has been indicated since early 2000, or even back to the 90s, where the whole idea that ?We?re fed up with you corrupt politicians? was one of the main motivations for the 1990 campaign for a constitution,? Tamar Hermann, the pollster who compiled the index, tells TIME. ?Israel still lacks a constitution, but a watershed public corruption trial loomed in the mid-2000s, when it appeared a prime minister might face indictment while in office: Ariel Sharon was under intense scrutiny for money allegedly flowing into his family from a magnate trying to build on Greek islands.? Sharon was not indicted, but his successor was ? Ehud Olmert stepped down as prime minister in 2009 and was indicted for a passel of corruption charges.

What happened next would frame the Lieberman case, at least in terms of public perception:? After years of headlines implying he was guilty, Olmert was acquitted on the most serious charges by a panel of judges. After being hounded from office by prosecutors, ?the former premier ended up at least resembling a victim, while pundits trained their outrage on the state attorney?s office for its conduct in the trial ?? which itself lasted two years.

Lieberman faces a similar situation: ?The first investigative file on him was opened in 1996, when he was a top aide to Netanyahu in his first term as prime minister.? That probe was leaked to the media, as were details of an array of investigations aimed his way over the years, the most serious allegedly involving businessmen transferring millions of dollars into offshore companies reportedly controlled by his daughter.

But in the end, attorney general Yehuda Weinstein announced on Thursday ?that the most serious charges would not be filed after all.? The indictment would be brought for Lieberman?s efforts to track the investigations ? specifically, for attempting to promote as ambassador to Belarus a former diplomat?convicted of tipping him off to details of a police probe. ?Relatively speaking, this was small potatoes, and allowed Lieberman to emerge looking both fairly clean and more persecuted than prosecuted. ?This cloud has been over him for, what, 16 years,? says Reuven Hazan, a political scientist at Hebrew University.? ?The image is not a politician that has gone wrong and is being punished, but a politician who?s been picked on by the legal system.?

Political analysts speculate over what went into the decision to abandon the more serious charges. During the years the investigation dragged on, much of it in the newspapers, some witnesses changed their stories; others refused to travel to Israel to testify.? But, says Hermann, ?basically both left and right are in harmony that the attorney general was too slow.?

Lieberman wants things to speed up.? His plan, he says, is to close the case altogether ? either by a swift trial or a plea bargain ? before a new government is formed. ?And every poll shows that Netanyahu will once again be the one forming that government. ?But Lieberman ?his presumptive successor as premier ? still faces legal risks.? If a judge decides Lieberman?s conduct was deliberate rather than incidental ? if it involves what the Israeli legal system calls ?moral turpitude?? the Moldova native would be barred from holding any office. ?Few, however, see things going that way, especially in wake of the Olmert case.

?The bottom line is that I don?t think it?s going to change much of anything,? Hazan tells TIME. ?I don?t think that his voters are so appalled by the fact that he just might have had a conflict of interest and they?re going to abandon him.? That?s not the nature of his voting bloc.? The bloc is Russian immigrants (a sizable chunk of the Israeli electorate) 70% of whom still favored Lieberman after the indictment was announced, according to a poll? by a Russian-language website. ?The figure was up a couple of points from two weeks earlier.

?Think of this as a weird combination of a Vladimir Putin and a Silvio Berlusconi,? says Hazan.? ?You have a very serious charismatic figure with a strongman image on the one hand, and who has constantly had run-ins with the legal system and uses it for political advantage.?

Voestalpine mulls $1 billion U.S. plant: report

VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria's group Voestalpine is considering a plan to build a $1 billion plant in the United States that would convert iron ore into concentrate used in steelmaking, Trend magazine reported.

Voestalpine declined to comment on the report, which was released ahead of publication on Monday.

Trend said the plant was envisioned for a coastal city in the southern United States, given cheap and reliable supplies of natural gas, political stability and efficient port infrastructure.

A source familiar with the situation said such a plan was under consideration but no decisions were imminent.

Voestalpine Chief Executive Wolfgang Eder has been pushing for foreign expansion to help diversify from Europe, where he says political opposition to closing plants is weighing on efforts to address chronic overcapacity in the steel sector.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.,?? With only days remaining until WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, Ryback set out to destroy experienced two-time WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio and send a message to The Shield. Also, 3MB battled the high-octane duo of Justin Gabriel & Tyson Kidd in an impromptu 3-on-2 Handicap Match.

Ryback def. Alberto Del Rio (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Before the contest got underway, Ricardo Rodriguez made his way to the ring and rather than give his patented ring introduction for Alberto Del Rio, he offered a video tribute for his favorite WWE Superstar (WATCH). As the celebratory video of The Mexican Aristocrat began running down a laundry list of his superior qualities, however, it was interrupted by three simple words that have taken WWE by storm: ?Feed Me More!?

Ryback had enough of the Del Rio?praise and made his way to the ring. Of course, this only upset the Mexican Superstar, who entered Bridgeport, Conn.?s Webster Bank Arena ready to teach his opponent a lesson in respect. Most of the time, WWE Superstars display some trepidation before entering the squared circle with Ryback, but Del Rio was so disgusted with the audacity of his opponent that his arrogance and overconfidence outweighed any fears he might have of Ryback?s sheer power.

When the opening bell sounded, Ryback faced a true test in his young and dominant career. Del Rio ? a legend in Mexico ? is a wise and shrewd tactician; a full-on show of strength would be a fool?s folly against a Superstar of Del Rio?s caliber. Nonetheless, Ryback?s powerful abilities certainly played in his favor.

The battle between the crafty veteran and powerful rookie was certainly a textbook example of agility vs. power. Del Rio?s offense was aggressive, knowing full well he had to keep his monstrous adversary on the defensive as often as possible. But as The Mexican Aristocrat discovered early in the bout, Ryback?s entire arsenal is based purely on strength.

Displaying both his cunning and experience, Del Rio managed to pin Ryback?s arm between the steel steps and the ring post. With his opponent trapped, the two-time WWE Champion kicked the steps, hoping to soften up Ryback for a Cross Armbreaker. Throughout the contest, The Mexican Aristocrat focused on Ryback?s arm, using his agility and lucha libre abilities to counter many of Ryback?s maneuvers and to keep the pressure on his opponent?s limb.

Though if there is one thing the WWE Universe has learned about Ryback over the course of 2012, it?s that not only is his power impressive, but also his resilience is equally as extraordinary. The hungry Superstar continued to fight and overpowered his opponent as Del Rio set up for his patented Cross Armbreaker.

Being slammed into the turnbuckle left The Mexican Superstar reeling, and with the WWE Universe chanting, Ryback hit the Meathook clothesline before executing Shell Shocked on Del Rio to pick up arguably his most impressive victory to date.

Following the match, Matt Striker asked Ryback about teaming with Team Hell No in their battle against The Shield at WWE TLC. When asked if he could coexist with Daniel Bryan and Kane, Ryback responded, ?Yes! Yes! Yes!? (WATCH)

Florida's Crist may run again; GOP says its ready

(AP) ? Now that former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist is a Democrat, pretty much everyone in Florida's political world expects him to seek his old job.

"I will consider it, and I will think about it," Crist told The Associated Press by phone while boating off of Miami and before a planned dinner Saturday evening with former Democratic governor and Sen. Bob Graham.

The former Republican governor revealed his long-anticipated conversion Friday, after more than two years as an independent. He made the announcement on Twitter and included a photo of his new voter registration form, which he filled out at the White House.

Earlier Saturday, Florida Republicans gathered for a meeting and said they will be extra motivated to re-elect Gov. Rick Scott if his opponent is Crist, who left the GOP during his 2010 run for Senate.

"Bring it on," Peter Feaman, the party's national committeeman, told a room of Republican activists. "That man sat at my house, in my kitchen, at my breakfast table and told me he was a Ronald Reagan Republican. OK, I'm putting my boots on, because guess what? You lied to me."

Should the 56-year-old Crist run, he could become the first person to run for Florida governor as a Republican and as a Democrat. Crist only served one term before choosing to run for Senate instead of re-election.

Republicans, anticipating the switch, have been attacking him for months. As Crist campaigned with President Barack Obama and other Democrats during the fall, Republicans ran a television ad and issued scores of press releases pointing out his previous conservative positions.

"I really feel at home. A lot of it was inspired by what Democrats have stood for, and honestly, friends have told me most of my political life, 'Charlie, you're really a Democrat and you just don't know it," Crist said.

Crist was a moderate governor and met often with Democratic leaders. At dinners in the governor's mansion, he includes both Republicans and Democrats at his head table. He endeared himself to the teachers union by vetoing a Republican priority bill that would have stripped teachers of tenure and based merit raises on test scores. He also won over many black leaders by championing civil rights issues, prompting one black lawmaker to describe him as the first black governor.

Since leaving the GOP, Crist, who called himself "the people's governor" while in office, has criticized the party for going too far to the right. Crist has already criticized Scott for refusing to extend early voting despite pleas from U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and other Democrats.

"The leadership of the party lately has gone off the cliff, I wasn't comfortable enough," Crist said. "What I love most about our state is our people ... I just have a feeling in my heart right now that leadership doesn't appreciate that fact."

Crist was elected governor in 2006 as a Republican, succeeding two-term Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. A popular governor and considered one of the best campaigners in the state, Crist used his charisma and feel-good messages to win over voters.

But many conservatives became disenchanted with Crist after he hugged President Barack Obama at a rally to push for the $787 billion stimulus package, which passed in 2009 with virtually no Republican support.

Although Crist was the early favorite for a U.S. Senate seat in 2010, conservatives began to rally around the bid of Marco Rubio in the 2010 GOP primary, prompting Crist's independent bid.

If he runs for his old job, Crist will have better name recognition than any other Democrat seeking the governor's seat, including former state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, who lost a hard-fought campaign to Scott.

Scott's approval ratings haven't come close to what Crist had in office. Scott, a former hospital chain CEO and tea party favorite who never ran for office before spending nearly $80 million of his and his family's money to win election, isn't considered a natural politician. He can be an awkward speaker, and it has taken a while for him to grow comfortable in the spotlight.

But that doesn't mean Crist would have an easy time winning. During primary elections, only about 20 percent of voters turn out, and they are the most faithful in the party. Activists on both sides will remember the many elections in which they fought Crist, who often called himself a Ronald Reagan and Jeb Bush Republican.

"We're going to be ready to play ball," said Republican Party of Florida Chairman Lenny Curry, noting that Crist previously praised former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, criticized Obama and held conservative views on abortion.

And it's not easy switching parties after reaching political success. After nearly three decades as a Republican U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter switched to the Democratic party rather than face a potentially uphill primary battle against a conservative challenger in 2010. Obama and Senate Democrats welcomed him, but Specter lost in that year's Democratic primary to Rep. Joe Sestak, who went on to lose in the fall to Republican Pat Toomey. Then there's former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, who won office as a Democrat and then lost his 1992 re-election bid as a Republican.

"The strong Democrats are the ones that vote in the non-presidential year, and they're the ones that are most likely to have a problem with Crist," said Democratic pollster David Beattie.

Beattie, however, said Crist has been smart about the transition because he got people used to the idea of him being a Democrat. After losing his independent bid for Senate, he began doing public events with Democrats. His wife, Carole, switched from Republican to Democrat. Then he began backing Democratic candidates in Florida, then Obama. And he spoke at last summer's Democratic National Convention.

"There are a lot of people who say, 'Oh, I thought he did that a long time ago,'" Beattie said. "I don't think he's stopped campaigning over the last two years."

Backed Or Whacked: One Keyboard And One Harmonica Strike Two Different Kickstarter Chords

backed-whackedEditor?s note:?Ross Rubin?is principal analyst at Reticle Research and blogs at?Techspressive. Each column will look at crowdfunded products that have either met or missed their funding goals. Follow him on Twitter?@rossrubin. Given Kickstarter?s mission as a place to promote creative projects, gadgets that have roots in the arts seem to have a particular affinity with the service. For example, hardly a week goes by without a device to steady or roll a camera gracing the Design section. Music-making devices don?t appear as often, but a pair of portable instruments/MIDI controller projects recently met with different fates on the service. Backed: QuNexus. Keith McMillen Instruments has been responsible for many firsts, all of which its namesake CEO can adeptly catch and throw in midair in QuNexus? Kickstarter video. The company is a returning Kickstarter alum, having raised more than $165,000 for the now-shipping QuNeo, an iPad-sized MIDI controller that features multicolored, multitouch light-up surfaces for feedback. QuNeo brimmed with unmarked controls, such as 16 trigger pads, nine multitouch sliders, two rotary sensors, and a look inspired by the illuminated disco dance floor that John Travolta made famous in Saturday Night Fever. If the QuNeo had a novel take on the drum pad, its QuNexus follow-on does the same for a portable MIDI keyboard controller. Most of its rectangular pads are laid out in two chromatic octaves that light up white or blue; the pads are sensitive to velocity and tilt. Unlike a conventional musical keyboard, you can press different parts of the squishy pads to bend the sound. (There is also a separate but small pitch bend pad.) The lack of much key travel on a keyboard-style MIDI controller may be more of a disadvantage than it is on a drum-style one, but the device is much thinner than a comparable traditional controller and less susceptible to having keys stressed during travel. With about a week to go in the campaign and with already more than 50 percent above its modest $20,000 funding goal, the QuNexus is expected to arrive in the tapping hands of musicians next April. Whacked: Jamboxx. The Jamboxx has nothing to do with the well-regarded Yves Behar-designed portable Bluetooth speaker devices from Jawbone. (The extra ?x? is for x-halation). While indeed boxy (boxxy?), the Jamboxx looks a bit like and is played similarly to a large harmonica. It can not only be used as an instrument or

Tiny structure gives big boost to solar power

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? Princeton researchers have found a simple and economical way to nearly triple the efficiency of organic solar cells, the cheap and flexible plastic devices that many scientists believe could be the future of solar power.

The researchers, led by electrical engineer Stephen Chou, were able to increase the efficiency of the solar cells 175 percent by using a nanostructured "sandwich" of metal and plastic that collects and traps light. Chou said the technology also should increase the efficiency of conventional inorganic solar collectors, such as standard silicon solar panels, although he cautioned that his team has not yet completed research with inorganic devices.

Chou, the Joseph C. Elgin Professor of Engineering, said the research team used nanotechnology to overcome two primary challenges that cause solar cells to lose energy: light reflecting from the cell, and the inability to fully capture light that enters the cell.

With their new metallic sandwich, the researchers were able to address both problems. The sandwich -- called a subwavelength plasmonic cavity -- has an extraordinary ability to dampen reflection and trap light. The new technique allowed Chou's team to create a solar cell that only reflects about 4 percent of light and absorbs as much as 96 percent. It demonstrates 52 percent higher efficiency in converting light to electrical energy than a conventional solar cell.

That is for direct sunlight. The structure achieves even more efficiency for light that strikes the solar cell at large angles, which occurs on cloudy days or when the cell is not directly facing the sun. By capturing these angled rays, the new structure boosts efficiency by an additional 81 percent, leading to the 175 percent total increase.

Chou said the system is ready for commercial use although, as with any new product, there will be a transition period in moving from the lab to mass production.

The physics behind the innovation is formidably complex. But the device structure, in concept, is fairly simple.

The top layer, known as the window layer, of the new solar cell uses an incredibly fine metal mesh: the metal is 30 nanometers thick, and each hole is 175 nanometers in diameter and 25 nanometers apart. (A nanometer is a billionth of a meter and about one hundred-thousandth the width of human hair). This mesh replaces the conventional window layer typically made of a material called indium-tin-oxide (ITO).

The mesh window layer is placed very close to the bottom layer of the sandwich, the same metal film used in conventional solar cells. In between the two metal sheets is a thin strip of semiconducting material used in solar panels. It can be any type -- silicon, plastic or gallium arsenide -- although Chou's team used an 85-nanometer-thick plastic.

The solar cell's features -- the spacing of the mesh, the thickness of the sandwich, the diameter of the holes -- are all smaller than the wavelength of the light being collected. This is critical because light behaves in very unusual ways in subwavelength structures. Chou's team discovered that using these subwavelength structures allowed them to create a trap in which light enters, with almost no reflection, and does not leave.

"It is like a black hole for light," Chou said. "It traps it."

The team calls the system a "plasmonic cavity with subwavelength hole array" or PlaCSH. Photos of the surface of the PlaCSH solar cells demonstrate this light-absorbing effect: under sunlight, a standard solar power cell looks tinted in color due to light reflecting from its surface, but the PlaCSH looks deep black because of the extremely low light reflection.

The researchers expected an increase in efficiency from the technique, "but clearly the increase we found was beyond our expectations," Chou said.

Chou and electrical engineering graduate student Wei Ding reported their findings in the journal Optics Express, published online Nov. 2, 2012. Their work was supported in part by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.

The researchers said the PlaCSH solar cells can be manufactured cost-effectively in wallpaper-size sheets. Chou's lab used "nanoimprint," a low-cost nanofabrication technique Chou invented 16 years ago, which embosses nanostructures over a large area, like printing a newspaper.

Besides the innovative design, the work involved optimizing the system. Getting the structure exactly right "is critical to achieving high efficiency," Ding said.

Chou said that the development could have a number of applications depending on the type of solar collector. In this series of experiments, Chou and Ding worked with solar cells made from plastic, called organic solar cells. Plastic is cheap and malleable and the technology has great promise, but it has been limited in commercial use because of organic solar cells' low efficiency.

In addition to a direct boost to the cells' efficiency, the new nanostructured metal film also replaces the current ITO electrode that is the most expensive part of most current organic solar cells.

"PlaCSH also is extremely bendable," Chou said. "The mechanical property of ITO is like glass; it is very brittle."

The nanostructured metal film is also promising for silicon solar panels that now dominate the market. Because the PlaCSH sandwich captures light independent of what electricity-generating material is used as the middle layer, it should boost efficiency of silicon panels as well. It also can reduce the thickness of the silicon used in traditional silicon solar panels by a thousand-fold, which could substantially decrease manufacturing costs and allow the panels to become more flexible.

Chou said the team plans further experiments and expects to increase the efficiency of the PlaCSH system as they refine the technology.

EADS shares soar as Daimler nets $2 billion from stake sale

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German carmarker Daimler raised over $2 billion from a lightning sale of shares in Airbus parent EADS on Thursday, making it the first beneficiary of a shake-up of the European aerospace company that sent EADS shares higher.

Daimler's sale of a 7.5 percent stake is the first step in a complex series of transactions designed to reduce the scope for government interference in Europe's largest aerospace group following a deal between politicians, banks and industrialists.

The deal led by France, Germany and Spain calls for governments and proxies to reduce a block of shareholdings in EADS to 30 percent from 50 percent, while removing a boardroom veto over industrial matters previously enjoyed by France.

Daimler said it had netted 1.66 billion euros ($2.2 billion) from selling a 7.5 percent stake in EADS.

EADS shares gained as much as 9 percent to 29.6 euros, recovering their value before the announcement in September of negotiations to merge with BAE Systems.

Although the $45 billion merger attempt failed, due in particular to opposition from Germany, many of the structures designed for the tie-up have been adopted, handing full day-to-day control to Chief Executive Tom Enders.

"The primary purpose of the changes to the EADS shareholder pact is a move towards normalizing the governance structure," said RBC Capital Markets analyst Rob Stallard.

EADS shares were also buoyed by its plans to buy back up to 15 percent of the stock to mop up excess shares and facilitate the exit of Daimler's fellow core industrial shareholder, French media company Lagardere.

The shake-up will see France and Germany holding stakes of 12 percent each and Spain on 4 percent. Senior partners France and Germany will have two non-civil servant representatives each on the board, but will only have the power to veto a list nominated by management from which the names will be drawn.

France had previously held a veto over appointments and other matters and sources close to the talks said Germany had hoped to duplicate these, but the powers were scrapped.

However, analysts say France and Germany will continue to exert indirect influence as major defense customers.

EADS has been eager to reduce state interference, fearing it might deter orders from other countries.

The changes are subject to a full extraordinary shareholder meeting in the first quarter, most likely early March.

DAIMLER INVESTS

In a placement that was several times oversubscribed, Daimler sold 61.1 million shares in EADS for 27.23 euros each, Wednesday's closing price and the top end of the expected range. It maintains 7.5 percent of EADS for the time being, matching a stake held by Lagardere, but both will be free to exit in 2013.

Daimler aims to focus on its core business at a time when it has become a distant third in the global luxury car market.

"We will invest the proceeds of the sale into the global growth of our divisions, our products and the extension of our technological leadership," Daimler finance chief Bodo Uebber and former EADS chairman said, confirming the company would not return the cash to shareholders.

The maker of Mercedes-Benz cars is struggling to turn around its fortunes, announcing plans to cut costs by 2 billion euros after it warned in October it would miss its earnings forecast this year and shelved its 2013 margin targets.

Daimler said it aimed to reduce its remaining 7.5 percent stake in EADS, but would not sell any more shares for a period of six months.
